I know, I know, 5 stars???!!! To me yes, 5 stars… If it makes me laugh out loud it get’s 5 stars. Why? These movies can be watched again and again without seeming stale to me. Finally, these movies are available on DVD. These movies are pure silliness, but loads of fun. Ok, it’s not art, but I laughed my butt off throughout the whole movie(s). It’s nice to see that Ritter will be remembered – he was a joy to watch in these two films. I would compare these movies to Dennis the Menace (Dir. by John Hughes). Special scenes to my heart are Martha Quinn (yes, the MTV VJ Martha Quinn) blind date; the food fight in the Bubble Room (in Maitland/Orlando FL -The Bubble Room closed down a few years ago, and it’s nice to see it is preserved in this movie); and Lorraine Newmann (from the Not Ready for Time Prime Players aka Saturday Night Live Original Member) wedding scenes. Pure Fun -Pure joy!

Problem Child is an all time fun movie to watch. Micheal Oliver does a tremendous job playing Junior Healy, a devilish child who creates chaos for particularly no reason at all. Even as a child, he placed under the door steps of many familys because nobody wants him. Even in the orphanage, the nuns want to get rid of him and threaten one of their employees , Mr. Peabody (Gilbert Godfred who happens to be a huge loud mouth like Chris Tucker), to make sure it gets done or he gets fired.

Anyway, the story is also about a couple by the name of Flo (Amy Yasbeck) and “little Ben” Healy who really want a child. Flo is a real pain in the neck and Ben’s dad ,”BIG Ben” healy, totally hates him. studies have shown it can’t be possible for them to give birth to a child but they can adopt one. Mr. Peabody tricks them into thinking that junior is a good boy and that is just the beggining. Junior makes things a living hell and at the same time junior’s “hero” ,Martin Beck (Micheal Richards) who happens to be wanted criminal, wants to find JR and be partners in crime with him because he thinks junior is an x-con.
This movie will bring you lots of laughs. This is one movie you can’t miss. If you thought kids like Dennis Mitchell (Dennis the Menace kid)or Bart Simpson were america’s #1 brats, well think again because this movie just might change your mind. Buy this because it is going to be worth it!

I can’t add anything to the praise for this film. If you love Disney films, this is considered one of the classics. I just wish to briefly comment on the criticism of the lack of a widescreen version. The first widescreen film, The King and I, was released in 1956. Previous to this all films were full screen. Peter Pan, released in 1953, and a good many of the Disney classics are only available in full screen aspect. This is not the Pan and Scan alteration of an original Widescreen format. The way this film is presented on the DVD is the original aspect ratio; Nothing has been altered. I have seen this so called criticism leveled against many Hollywood classics such as Casablanca, Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz. Please, get off your high horse and stop whinning about how Disney or whatever movie company is ripping you off. None of these films ever had a widescreen version to begin with. Do a little research and you could be content to enjoy these classics in the aspect ratio they were orginally presented in. Thats all I wish to say.

The children in the Darling family love story about Peter Pan. So naturally when he shows up one night looking for his missing shadow, they’re thrilled to go back with him to Never Land. There, they face Indians and “the world’s most famous crook,” Captain Hook. Will they survive their adventures with the boy who never wants to grow up?

I have always had a fascination with this story. As a kid I remember checking the Disney picture book version out of the library week after week. When I finally got to see it, I was enthralled. There is just something magical about the story. It’s partially the coming together of all the boyhood adventures in one place. Mermaids, Indians, and Pirates? What more could any boy want? And, of course, the ability to fly. The “You can fly” sequence over London is one of my all time favorites. The whole movie really is animated very well with a story that movies quickly from place to place with lots of humor to keep everyone entertained and gorgeous animation of the fanciful Never Land.

This special edition is worth tracking down. The picture (original full frame) is sharp and the surround sound is very nice. Extras include a documentary on the making of the movie and a promotional theatrical featurette from the original release. The “audio commentary” is unique. Hosted by Roy Disney, it consists of selections from interviews of the voice talent, live action models, animators, and animation historians. While not your usual commentary, it’s fascinating stuff and well worth a listen. Finally, there’s a treasure hunt game and DVD storybook for kids.

This movie still brings a smile to my face and probably always will. Maybe my friends are right when they say I love this movie so much because I always wanted to be Peter Pan.

Truffaut’s film and the novel from which it is adapted have both been misunderstood for too long. To start with, you have to understand that Bradbury’s novels, plays, and story are almost always allegorical – so you have to look for meanings on more than one level. Truffaut’s film of Fahrenheit 451 captures all of the allegorical levels of the novel. To explain: One of the many reasons human beings read and write books is because we have a deep need to know if our inner experiences are shared by others – this need can only be answered within the context of an intimate relationship, either with another human being or with a book, which allows us to reveal or to be revealed as we are. The more the State controls the use of language, the more we are controlled. In Bradbury’s novel the State effectively limits intimacy by forbidding books; and since the only reference to reality is dictated by the State, what can Montag or his wife know of love? How intimate can their relationship be? Fahrenheit 451 is a story about a man who has conformed completely to external reality; or has he? Can anyone really sell their soul to the State? Truffaut’s film beautifully articulates the story, atmosphere, and themes of Bradbury’s novel, as Montag unconsciously – as if sleepwalking – begins to stack the kindling, dry wood, and fuel of his dehumanized existence for the moment when his creative energy can no longer be contained and his life bursts into flames. Notice, also, how Bernard Herrman’s score evokes these images of somnambulism, fire building, and spontaneous combustion. The rest, of course, is a story of rebirth, of the phoenix rising from the ashes – the victory of creative passion over State control. To summarize, 451 synergizes the story of a man’s mid-life crisis with the crisis of repression of human values represented by McCarthyism. Note well: you have to give yourself over to this film in order to really appreciate it – the film requires a meditative state of mind and empathic response. Montag finds that he can no longer simply function as a cog in a machine – he needs to be loved for himself. Clearly, the literal or analytically minded will not “get” this film; neither will the romantically inclined. It’s a film about wholeness, about not allowing yourself to be fragmented, or having parts of yourself chopped off by external forces. You have to bring your total self to it. It’s a film about actually living through your worst life crisises, learning from them, and determining your own way of life, instead of doping and drugging yourself with memory killers devised by the State. In short, watch the film and form your own opinion – you dont need the concensus or false reassurance of a film critic or other idiot in order to live your own life.

Fahrenheit 451 is the temperature at which book paper will burn. It is the basis for the premise of this film, which is based upon the Ray Bradbury’s classic sci-fi novel of the same name. The film takes the viewer to a stark future in which firemen start fires rather than put them out. Their main mission appears to be to root out books, wherever they may be found, and burn them. Those who harbor books in their home are breaking the law and are subject to arrest by the state. The written word is simply forbidden.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Fahrenheit 451! Click Here

Oskar Werner plays the role of Guy Montag, a fireman who is married to a beautiful air-head named Linda, who spends her days popping pills, while glued to a wall screen TV. Played with appropriate bubble-brained inertia by the talented Julie Christie, this is just one of the dual roles she plays in this film. The other role is that of Clarisse, a would be school teacher and seeming misfit in that society, as she actually likes to talk about ideas, the very reason that books are forbidden. It seems that books are looked upon as giving people ideas, which is viewed by the state as a mechanism for making people unhappy with their lot.

When Clarisse singles out Montag for conversation, he is intrigued by the fact that she is capable of independent thought. It is not long before he, too, like those whose books he has burned, is also, to his wife’s dismay, hoarding books. She feels that Montag is simply sucking the fun out of her life. Clarisse and Montag form an alliance of sorts, as his world comes tumbling down. Betrayed by his conformist wife Linda, Montag joins the ranks of fugitive book lovers, hunted by the very firemen with whom he served. These fugitives are not known by their names, but rather, by the title of the book to which they have committed to memory, in hopes that one day the world will once again be ready to accept that which they have committed to memory.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Fahrenheit 451! Click Here

The film has a stark, futuristic quality about it. Symbolism is rampant throughout the film. The homes of those who hoard books are often homes that are cozy and reminiscent of homes of our book loving society today, while those of people who are with the program are stark and cold. The all black uniforms worn by the firemen are reminiscent of those worn by the storm troopers of Nazi Germany. The actions of the firemen, as they search for those who would hoard books, as well as the search for the books themselves, are also reminiscent of the search by the Nazis for those who would harbor those who were deemed undesirable under the Nazi regime, as well as the search for undesirables themselves. Oskar Werner’s German accents underscores this imagery.

This is Francois Truffaut’s first and only foray into the direction of an English language film. He himself was co-writer of the screenplay, which is perhaps why the imagery seems to supercedes the dialogue. There are many stylistic flourishes throughout the film. Ray Bradbury’s, “The Martian Chronicles”, is one of the books seen to be burning. It is also one of the books that a fugitive has committed to memory. Newspapers in the film consist of pictures only. Even the opening credits of the film are in keeping with the premise of the film that the written word is forbidden. As such, the opening credits are spoken. Moreover, Bernard Herrmann’s edgy score certainly adds to the bleak, futuristic feel of the film. This is a film that those who enjoyed the novel upon which the film is based should see.

Highest Recommendation

This was a series that had everything a Science-fiction fan could want. It had an enigmatic & tormented main character Duncan McCloud, played superbly by English actor Adrian Paul. Each episode had plenty of angst, action, suspense, fine locations, & a fair amount of romance.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Highlander The Series – Season 3! Click Here

This season saw the ever noble immortal Duncan McCloud having to deal with Tessa’s death, Richie’s new found immortality, facing the mutually repressed feelings he & fellow immortal Amanda have for one another, & the first multi-episode story involving Methos, the oldest known living immortal. These episodes showed an intruiging look into male bonding & the angst that friedship can bring to all concerned. From episode one “The Samurai” to episode nine “Shadows” to the “Finale” episodes numbers twenty one to two. They all spotlighted & magnified the human condition that was relatable even to we non-immortals. Would any of us really want to live forever?

Plus, almost every epiode has three bonus features. Outakes, cut scenes, behind the scenes with cast & crew, interviews, & information on the Watcher Chronicles characters. There are also special features which include a blooper reel & promos. Lastly, several episodes have both video & audio commentary.

After the last volume of Desert Punk, I had lost complete hope in this series. While I knew it was about sexual humor and general hi-jinks, I also expected somewhat of a storyline in which to follow. Yet the last volume and the ones before it had very little in them besides episode plot lines, which I grew out of in the days of Looney Tunes. Plus, without any kind of continuing story, the humor just kind of grew old.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Desert Punk, Vol. 4 – Desert Dung! Click Here

This volume, thankfully, seems to be heading in the right direction. It introduces a little more of the history of Desert Punk, casts some new light on the main characters of the story, including Punk’s past, and even shows what could be the antagonistic force to the story. And it does all this while maintaining the humor. While no, it’s definitely not the best anime, it’s certainly getting better. It even has new opening and ending credits to signify the change.

If Desert Punk was a drunk staggering through the streets after the bars closed, then this volume would be him picking himself up off the ground after a particularly hard fall (volume three). Now, all he has to do is get home safely and I’m hoping the final two volumes can achieve this. Obviously, if you’ve been collecting the Desert Punk volumes, then I’ve no need to recommend it to you. But if you haven’t and you’re reading this out of curiosity, then I will only say that if you enjoy anime like Excel Saga then you’ll love Desert Punk.

Even those who don’t care for writer-director Dario Argento’s later baroque extravaganzas may warm to his debut feature, a well-received thriller in which an American writer living in Rome (Tony Musante) witnesses an assault on a woman in an art gallery and is subsequently targeted by the would-be assassin, a crazed psychopath who’s been terrorizing the city with a series of brutal murders. Typical of an Argento thriller, the hapless hero’s investigation unleashes a cycle of violence which culminates in a climactic unmasking that will take some viewers completely by surprise.

Loosely inspired by Fredric Brown’s novel ‘The Screaming Mimi’ (filmed under that title in 1958), Argento’s first film is a fairly straightforward thriller with horror asides, anchored by a strong narrative, an increasingly bizarre series of supporting characters, and a strong Everyman hero who slots the puzzle together piece by piece before realizing that the most important clue to the killer’s identity was there in front of him all the time. Musante is given excellent support by English actress Suzy Kendall as his girlfriend (the scene in which she’s besieged alone in her apartment as the killer hacks through the door with a knife is truly the stuff of nightmares) and Enrico Maria Salerno as the cop charged with finding the killer before he/she strikes again.

Despite Argento’s prior screenwriting credits, including significant contributions to the script of Sergio Leone’s ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST (1969), producers were unconvinced of his directorial abilities and wanted to pull him off the picture during the first few weeks of shooting, but Argento persevered under an iron-clad contract and ultimately proved his critics wrong with the finished product, a genuinely engrossing mystery punctuated by scenes of explicit horror.

The film puts a late-1960s Italian spin on the kind of movie that Hitchcock had already popularized in America, and is leavened with the same kind of uproarious humor: Salerno gets the best line of dialogue during a police line-up when he despairs: “How many times do I have to tell you? Ursula Andress belongs with the transvestites, not the perverts!” And later, an outrageously camp antiques dealer offers a jaw-dropping description of one of the killer’s former victims: “It was said she preferred women. I couldn’t care less – I’m no racist, for heaven’s sake!” Briskly edited by Franco Fraticelli, and featuring a brief appearance from distinctive character actor Reggie Nalder (MARK OF THE DEVIL, SALEM’S LOT) as an assassin-for-hire, “Bird” is arguably Argento’s warmest, most humane thriller until TENEBRAE in 1982.

There are two types of Dario Argento films: those after “Four Flies on Grey Velvet” (excluding “The Five Days of Milan,” which was never released in the U.S.) and those before it. “The Bird With the Crystal Plumage,” Argento’s first film, belongs to the category of the before and includes the noticeable differences between the two. While the entire body of Argento’s work is something to admire, his first three films are surprisingly well-plotted, given Argento’s notorious lack of interest in matters of narrative structure. “Bird” begins with Sam Dalmas, an American writer living in Rome, witnessing an attempted murder in an art gallery. Though he is unable to do anything, his fortuitous arrival saves the victim from almost certain death. His passport confiscated and at first held as a suspect, Sam is told by the police that this is the fourth attack in one month. The only difference is, the victim, a beautiful woman named Monica Ranieri, was the first to survive. Troubled by the idea that he saw something that didn’t quite fit, he soon begins his own investigation, putting both his life and the life of his girlfriend at great risk. Several attempts are made on their lives, and everytime Sam is able to learn of someone who might be able to help him, that person is murdered. Finally, in a double-twist ending, Argento reveals the identity of the killer in a cleverly constructed manner. A pure delight from start to finish, “Bird With the Crystal Plumage” is one of the most entertaining (if minimal) thrillers since Hitchcock. Another attribute is Argento’s knack for always creating a cast of wonderfully offbeat characters. Be sure to catch Inspector Morosini’s exclamation regarding the “perverts” in the line-up sequence. Black humor is equally interwoven with generous amounts of suspense to create a fast-paced and clever mystery/thriller.

I just want to add my voice to the other reviewers who praise Promises. Their descriptions will give you a good idea about the films contents so I’ll just say, this is a very moving and informative film. Most of my reviews are from the stand-point of a middle school teacher looking for materials to use in my class. This film is outstanding! It’s the type of lesson you’ll be excited to teach. If you are looking for something to use to explore and learn about Israel and Palestinian relations buy this DVD. I thought the length of the DVD would lose my students. I was wrong– they stayed engaged through the whole film (about 3 class periods).

If you believe in your heart that, despite every hurdle, peace is possible between the Israelis and Palestinians, this film will fill you with hope and wonder. That’s not to say it’s rosy – the children depicted in the film often exhibit anger and intolerance, but the mere act of recognition between the children of these two warring groups is enough to inspire faith in their futures. This film is a beautiful document of a precious, brave and tenuous experiment on the part of the filmmakers. May we all have the courage to try to guide the next generation into a more peaceful, more understanding world.

I have never made up my mind if it is more painful to watch “Othello” or “King Lear.” In both cases, you feel like leaping onto the stage and strangling the leading character for being so utterly stupid. It is the supreme test of any actor to make these men sympathetic enough to move an audience to tears. Once during a lecture, someone asked me for a fast distinction between comedy and tragedy and I came up with “Comedy is what happens when women are in charge, tragedy when men are.” I do not think I have seen a really satisfactory performance of “Othello” (in which a good man in charge is taken over by an evil man). More often than not, Iago steals the show, mainly because he is having such a good time duping the entire cast right down to the last few minutes of Act V.

Buy,Download, Or Stream William Shakespeare: Othello! Click Here

However, we now have an Image Entertainment DVD of a nearly complete “Othello” (ID2622RZDVD) shown on British television in 1990, based on a Royal Shakespeare production directed by Trevor Nunn. Now I do not know what Italian military uniforms looked like in about 1865, when this play seems to be set, but the ones you see are far too much like American Civil War garb. However, there is a point that helps us understand Iago to this “anything but the historical period setting and costuming” attitude toward staging classics nowadays.

Buy,Download, Or Stream William Shakespeare: Othello! Click Here

Nunn was astute enough to cast an opera baritone, Willard White (whom you might have seen as a magnificent Porgy on an EMI video of the Gershwin work), in the title role. He is able to do with the great rolling iambic lines what another black actor found utterly beyond him in a film version not too long ago, and in the early part of the play he gives us a very likable Othello.

His evil genius, Iago, is played by Ian McKellen as all soldier, standing at strict attention at times even when addressing the audience. Here the blue Union uniform looks just right for a man who will use any “good cause” to conceal his villainy. Unhappily, though, he often lapses into whispers and mutterings that are simply unintelligible-and that too seems to be a sure sign of recent film making.

Nunn has given Imogen Stubbs all the right moves for Desdemona; but I find her voice a little squeaky and her physical appearance a little too girlish to bear the weight of the role. Yes, she is very good but somehow I found her not right. Perhaps you will disagree entirely.

Clive Swift (from “Keeping Up Appearances”) is directed to shout far too much as Desdemona’s father, while Michael Grandage as the idiot Roderigo is made to fall onto the floor like a spoiled brat (which he is) in a temper tantrum (which looks absurd). The Cassio (Sean Baker) is adequate, the Bianca (Marsha A. Hunt) amateurish. On the other hand, Zoe Wanamaker makes a superb Emilia, and Nunn has found some interesting aspects of her relationship with her “honest” husband, Iago.

The only lines I noticed omitted are most of those between Cassio and the clown, here a silly solider, in a scene that is almost always entirely cut. The pacing is at times far too slow-the video runs 205 minutes-but you really must see this production many times for the great acting of White and McKellen. English and Drama Departments, take note.

I have only seen two other productions of Othello. One was an amateurish high-school like production staged as it would have been in Elizabethan times complete with Elizebethan sets and a second one was a production at my high-school set in what was either a modern day boot camp or Iraq with the sort of acting that should have been in the first production I saw. But this one takes the cake. The acting is amazing. Trevor Nunn has given us an amazing production as he has done so before with “Porgy and Bess”, “The Merchant of Venice”, and “Oklahoma” shattering all set stereotypes. What we get is a powerful production of Shakespeare’s tale of jealousy. In short, it’s a freakin’ good show.

Willard White displays great magnitude as Othello. Imogen Stubbs, a.k.a. Mrs. Trevor Nunn, gives us a Desdemona totally fresh and free of all stereotypes. Zoe Wanamaker (otherwise known to younger audiences as Madame Hooch from the first Harry Potter movie) is an amazing Emilia. But the performance that steals the show is Ian McKellen as Iago. Sure he mumbles a lot but what a voice he has. What I especially love is how each monologue or soliloquy or aside is addressed to the camera as if we are part of the action. It helps to feed the tension onscreen. I also felt that the costumes were very Civil War-ish. If they were trying to set the show in the civil war, they forgot to get rid of their British accents. I don’t know what it was. Despite these flaws, it was an amazing performance that is worthy of five stars.

Banner of the Stars II opens with Lafiel and Jinto speaking Abh (which tricked me too…), just a warning, you may be very confused.

This series, though I haven’t seen all of it yet, focuses more on the emotional aspects. Such as the relationship between Lafiel and Jinto. However, this series, at least in the first DVD that I’ve seen (I’ve just ordered the 2nd one) is somewhat implying that *Slight spoiler (from the opening sequence/episode)* that Jinto dies at the end */end spoiler*. I am of the personal opinion that this is not true, as if you read the preview text on the third disk (no spoilers in it), it contains these words “And Lafiel must finally come to terms with what is important to her.” Which seems to imply a rescue of some sort.. or at least, I fondly hope so. I’d be MAJORLY po’ed if he DID die.

Aside from my personal rantings, I can already tell that this series is going to be one incredibly powerful one. Possibly even better than Banner of the Stars I (which in my opinion is better than Crest, but oh well). Its full of much more emotion then the others, and the voice acting of the main characters has improved yet again (the same difference between Crest and Banner I).

I cannot put this one down, I must see what happens, which is why I’m making the warning that this is as additictive as cocaine.

This is a very good third season of Crest of the Stars. This series consintrates more on the relationship of Jinto and Lafiel, which I don’t know about you guys, but to me its about time. This is a rather sad one because they are trying to suggest that Jinto is going to die. Well you know what..I think its a TRICK! You can’t kill Jinto, it doesn’t happen. I think that this will be a great series and all of you should watch it.
